Paraumbilical hernia

Paraumbilical hernia Surgery at Radhika Women's Care

At Radhika Women’s Care, we provide expert surgical treatment for paraumbilical hernias, which occur just above or below the belly button. This type of hernia results from a weakness in the abdominal wall that allows tissue or part of the intestine to protrude, causing a visible bulge and possible discomfort. Unlike small umbilical hernias, paraumbilical hernias in adults usually do not resolve on their own and often require surgical repair to prevent complications.

Led by Dr. Radhika Patel (M.S. General Surgery), our clinic specializes in women-centered surgical care using safe, modern techniques. The surgery involves repositioning the herniated tissue and strengthening the abdominal wall, often with a mesh to reduce the risk of recurrence. It is typically a day-care procedure with minimal downtime. Patients benefit from a short recovery period, small incisions, and personalized post-operative care.

Whether caused by pregnancy, weight gain, or abdominal strain, paraumbilical hernias can be treated effectively at our clinic. We ensure a caring, confidential environment where women feel supported and confident throughout their surgical journey.

Post-Operative Care After
Paraumbilical Hernia Surgery

  1. Rest and Activity
Rest for the first few days and avoid any heavy lifting, bending, or straining for at least 4–6 weeks. Gradually resume light activities as advised by your surgeon.

  2. Wound Care
Keep the surgical site clean and dry. Do not wet the area until your doctor permits. Avoid applying any creams or powders unless prescribed.

  3. Pain Management
Mild pain or discomfort is normal. Take prescribed pain medications regularly and avoid over-the-counter medicines without your surgeon’s approval.

  4. Diet and Hydration
Eat light meals for the first few days and gradually return to your normal diet. Include fiber and drink plenty of water to avoid constipation, which can strain the abdominal wall.

  5. Preventing Constipation
Use stool softeners if recommended. Straining during bowel movements should be strictly avoided.

  6. Wearing Support Garments
An abdominal binder may be advised to support your abdomen and reduce discomfort during recovery.

  7. Signs of Infection
Watch for increased redness, swelling, pus, fever, or worsening pain around the incision. Contact the clinic immediately if any of these occur.

  8. Mobility
Light walking is encouraged after 24 hours to improve blood flow and prevent clots, but avoid overexertion.

  9. Follow-Up Appointments
Attend all scheduled visits for stitch removal (if needed) and to ensure proper healing.

  10. Return to Work/Exercise
You can return to desk work in about a week. For physically demanding work or exercises, wait until your surgeon gives clearance.

FAQ

Hernia Surgeries faq
What is the difference between an umbilical and paraumbilical hernia?

An umbilical hernia occurs directly at the belly button, while a paraumbilical hernia occurs just above or below it. Paraumbilical hernias are more common in adults and usually require surgery.

Yes, in adults, surgery is the definitive treatment. Unlike small umbilical hernias in infants, paraumbilical hernias do not close on their own and may worsen over time.

Paraumbilical hernia surgery usually takes 30–60 minutes and is often performed as a day-care procedure, allowing you to go home the same day.

In most cases, yes. A surgical mesh is used to strengthen the abdominal wall and reduce the risk of recurrence, especially for larger hernias.

Most patients can return to light activities within a week and resume full activities, including exercise, after 4–6 weeks based on healing and your surgeon’s advice.
